In dit boek tref je de Ekstersint die het niet kan laten om zijn cadeautjes terug te stelen, de Pinguïnsint die de Hollandse winter te warm vindt, de Mammoetsint die niet zeker weet of hij bestaat, de Neushoornsint die last heeft van een allergie, Sinterschildpad die meer dan een eeuw doet over de reis vanuit Spanje - en natuurlijk Sinterkuikentje. 

De heerlijke, talrijke kleurentekeningen zijn van Saskia Halfmouw, met wie ik opnieuw samenwerkte na Papa is een ijsbeer, en de vormgeving is van Roald Triebels.

In 2008 verscheen De gelukvinder, het boek dat ik op basis van het leven van Anoush Elman schreef. Daarin maken we de vlucht uit Afghanistan van Hamayun en zijn ouders en broers en zusje mee, plus hun verblijf in een asielzoekerscentrum. Het boek eindigt onbeslist, omdat we toen nog niet wisten of ze ooit een verblijfsvergunning zouden krijgen.

Dat gebeurde gelukkig wel, het gezin woont al heel wat jaren in een fijn eigen huis. Maar niet alleen het gezin woont daar, ook dwergkonijn Misjka. Anoush vertelde me het bijzondere verhaal van dit huisdier, en veertien jaar na ons vorige boek is er nu dus een nieuwe samenwerking. De hoofdpersoon is dit keer Roya, Hamayuns zusje, maar verder ontmoeten we alle personages uit De gelukvinder weer - en het verhaal begint op de dag dat ze in het huis gaan wonen. 

Dit boek, Misjka, is voor veel jongere kinderen dan De gelukvinder. Annet Schaap maakte er prachtige tekeningen in kleur bij en het omslag is van Roald Triebels. De flaptekst is:

 

Als Roya met haar ouders en broers eindelijk een huis krijgt in Nederland, vindt ze dat daar ook een huisdier bij hoort. Het wordt een schattig dwergkonijntje, en ze noemt het Misjka. De hele familie is dol op hem.
Roya begint aan Misjka te vertellen over de vlucht uit haar land. Maar ze beseft dat ze daar zelf lang niet alles meer van weet.
En dan, op een dag, is Misjka opeens verdwenen.

Dit ontroerende verhaal over de liefde voor een huisdier en de vlucht van een gezin uit een oorlogsgebied is gebaseerd op ware gebeurtenissen.

Het derde en afsluitende deel van de stripgedichten! Opnieuw mocht ik samenwerken met de geweldige Floor de Goede die in elke strip nog zoveel méér vertelt dan er in het gedicht staat. Voor dit boek combineerde hij zijn technieken uit de twee eerdere stripgedichtenbundels met die uit IK BEN BIJ DE DINOSAURUSSEN GEWEEST.

- In 2008 verscheen het eerste deel met stripgedichten: OPA LAAT ZIJN TENEN ZIEN, dat werd bekroond met een Zilveren Griffel. In 2010 kwam DRAKEN MET STEKKERS, bekroond met een Vlag en Wimpel en met de Stripschappenning voor Stripalbum van het Jaar (voor de Jeugd).

This richely illustrated book (in full colour) was my first cooperation with the young and highly talented illustrator Mattias De Leeuw. It's a magical, thrilling story, about a girl that has an enchanting encounter: one day Luna sees thirteen little running deer. They jump out of a blue vase in front of her on the table. It's the most beautiful thing she has ever seen. The little deer call her 'Duchess'. Suddenly the deer disappear again in a blue poster of the ocean. Luna wants to tell everything to mum. But her brother Ralf stops her. Ralf also saw an animal once, he tells. But when Ralf told dad, he never saw his animal again...The story culminates in a thrilling showdown between Raf ’s animal, a roaring lion, and Luna’s deer. And it turns out that Raf is also looking for confirmation that he matters and that he’s important too. 
This book came as a storm: I wrote it (in short sentences) as if I was chasing the story. Great experience!

This second story about the beautiful dog Sam is, just as SAM SHOWED UP, based on a real dog, a real story, and real dog-owners: my brother's family in Canada. In this book the dog disappears and 9-year old Kix sets off in search of him. The book is just as dear to me as the first one. The beautiful black and white illustrations were once again made by Philip Hopman, whose pencil masters all animals and all children.

This story is based on the real events that occurred when I was visiting my brother's family in Canada. This beautiful dog appeared - and it decided to stay. But it had a heartwrenching history, that urged my nephew Kix (the young main character in the book) to act, because no-one else but him could save Sam... The book is very dear to me. It got great response, together with the second volume (SAMS MYSTERIES), which belongs to this first book as a twin story. The beautiful black and white illustrations were made by Philip Hopman, whose pencil masters all animals and all children.

Another text that I wrote to already-existing images by Isabelle Vandenabeele. It's her variation of the classical tale about Bluebeard, more suited for grown-ups maybe, or for kids that like to shiver: one day Louise realises that her life has become boring. She used to be a horror-loving girl, who dared anything and who adored bad boys, like Rotten Boy. Louise wants to do something exciting and goes to Shiver Forest. When she is attacked by a wolf, Rotten Boy rescues her. He takes her to his castle and then leaves her alone. He forbids her to open some of the doors, but of course a horror girl never obeys. This way, Louise discovers that Rotten Boy collects women heads. She can leave the castle just in time and sets a trap for Rotten Boy.
